¿ Nuts and Pepper for the Professors ? ... In the 18th century, it was fairly common for university professors to be paid in "Naturalien", at least in part. This receipt shows us 🌰, 🍋 and even "pepper nuts", all of which were carefully priced before distribution ...

📖 Alert : my book "Underground Mathematics" seems to now be available in paperback 🎉 So if you've always been to learn everything about the geometry of mining, mathematical practitioners, their customs and instruments, you can now do that at an almost reasonable price 😋 ... doi.org/10.1017/9781...

Assez curieux ... Le livre est rédigé sous la forme de 25 lettres, cela se veut une introduction popularisante, mais l'auteur rentre assez vite dans les mathématiques "supérieures" de l'époque. Ceci dit il y a eu au moins trois éditions, donc cela a dû avoir un certain succès !

Ils sont souvent annotés ou réliés avec d'autres ouvrages. Dans Bouvard et Pécuchet, Flaubert en fait le symbole d'une connaissance parfois superficielle, mais largement plus accessible que les 📖 des savants. Et encore aujourd'hui on en trouve un peu partout dans les brocantes ... 😉 #bookhistory

Les éditeurs comme Roret ont contribués à la diffusion de ces connaissances, mais aussi du savoir scientifique et technique au 19ème ... son "Encyclopédie des Sciences et des Arts" réunit l'académicien Lacroix et l'arpenteur Hogard ... ces petits formats, vendus non reliés, sont abordables ...

On y trouve un décimètre ("de grandeur naturelle"), mais aussi un modèle du stère pour mesurer le bois ... et bien sûr de multiples tableaux de conversions pour transformer les anciens pouces, pieds et lignes en mètres :
