if you go too far in either direction, you end up annoying 😅😅 hardcore jazz nerds are annoying, and hardcore classical nerds are annoying

love coltrane! i've been listening to his soprano stuff quite a bit lately, along with sidney bechet and steve lacy. a lot of soprano in my rotation since i've got one for until uni starts back up again in late february, so i wanna try to get decent at it by then :)

yeah 100%, it's been a thing in america far longer since that is where jazz was born. i believe it was around the 1970s when people became more accepting of jazz as a degree, though there was jazz in academia for a lot longer than that

there's definitely some classical music snobbery going on 😭 there's a bit of that at my uni, too lol. but i feel like this mostly comes from other musicians and not listeners

it definitely is now for the most part. the whole academic side of it is relatively new, which was created to legitimise jazz as real music worth studying and playing, etc. which has definitely worked and has shifted global perspectives

ohhh ok, my bad. i don't believe most people see jazz as pretentious, at least not very much. in universities i feel like they're trying to "legitimise" it as more "high brow" since historically people saw it as "low brow," though this isn't unique to new zealand, it's a global issue

it's a fairly small scene 😅 everyone knows everyone. my experience has been that most of the people playing jazz at the pre-professional and professional level are quite open-minded and welcoming

or at the very least large age gaps are more normalised

it might be because i live in the most queer city in nz, and the fact that there's a really high number of students at my uni who identify as queer in some way. not sure what it is about jazz performance here that attracts so many queer people

oh interesting! about half the people in my course are lgbt in some way

it is a very queer major in a very queer degree

YEAH 😭 like the only thing we could possibly have in common is that his kid goes to the same uni as me 💀

i also do think older men can be attractive, but because i'm only 18 that stays a fantasy lol. but yeah i'm not sure why someone who was in high school before i was even a concept is trying to get with me 😭 and yeah "experience a trans" is crazy 😭

it's chasers for the most part 😭 i got a message earlier today saying "tbh i've always wanted to experience a trans. i'm keen if you are" which... yeah. says a lot. dude was 34 too
