I've only ever used the indoor ones in the government-center. Though, mostly, since I'm going to be there, any way, I just do early in-person voting rather than risking the whole "are the interior and exterior envelopes 100% correct" thing.

We don't get notified that the ballot has been processed, but Virginia has a website for checking. Usually, confirmation shows up in that website within 48hrs of dropping a ballot off in one of the drop-boxes.

More importantly, do what they can to facilitate early voting. Dunno about you, but even if my local PD is at my polling place and skirmishing with ICE, I don't want to try to navigate a combat scene.
