Five tips for supporting someone with a learning disability 1. Take extra time People with learning disabilities often need longer to process information and and might find things overwhelming to talk about all at once. 2. Use accessible language Avoid using jargon or complicated words. Keep it simple and be pro-active in explaining new terms. 3. Use appropriate responses Try to find or advocate for information in plain English or Easy Read where available 4. Don't assume Don't assume what conversations are and aren't appropriate, as this stops people's voices being heard and their choices being respected. 5. Don't judge When having conversations about sensitive topics, people with learning disabilities may not have all the 'right' words. Think about making a safe space for questions.
