A comma isn't necessary in that sentence & doesn't change anything. If they meant Russia sold Alaska back to the US, the correct position of the word "back" would be, "Russia did sell Alaska back to the US in 1867," or possibly, "Russia did sell back Alaska to the US in 1867."
