reminded me of Gloom Division with the imagery (though the book is more graphic about it all.)

I know this post is a few weeks old, but was it a straight line of lights that appeared then faded? I saw that and looked it up. Apparently I'd caught sight of one of the starlink satellites launching. Might've been what you saw!
