The contractor hired to build the site withdrew its request that afternoon before the city council meeting. That was announced at the meeting, but people still spoke out against it. (See my post further down this thread for info source.)

@wyden.senate.gov said yesterday that ICE wants to avoid the negative attention they would get if they were in the Willamette Valley. My guess: Of coastal communities w/ airport & military footprint (i.e. USCG), Newport was closest to the valley.

Yes, I think it is one of the biggest communities on the coast when you take in all those nearby. To me, it still feels like a small town. Not Yachats-small, but small nonetheless.

As word spread this week about a potential ICE detention and deportation facility locating in Newport, OR, opposition was so swift that by Wed. the building contractor withdrew its inquiry to the city. Oregon is one of just a few states that does not have an ICE facility.

Also, last month the Coast Guard relocated a rescue helicopter away from Newport in anticipation of using its airport to deport people. This comes right at the beginning of crabbing season. That community fought tooth & nail to keep that asset in 2014. “Lives will be lost,” said one resident.
