#THREAD: New Mexico has a punitive damage problem when it comes to medical malpractice cases, as compared to other states👀(1)

The numbers don't sugarcoat New Mexico's health care crisis.

NM will soon find out whether its application for $1 billion in federal funding to expand rural health care access over the next five years will be approved.

However, New Mexico may face a roadblock for approval - It is not a member of several interstate compacts for health-care workers. (1)

NM’s 1st Judicial District Chief Judge says medical malpractice cases are up “significantly" in the area over the last few years.

This surge shows venue shopping is a problem. Providers should be judged by the communities in which they practice. It's about fairness and justice.

An independent OB/GYN practicing in New Mexico pays an average of $102,089 / yr for their medical malpractice insurance premium. That rate is much higher than neighboring states.

The system needs reform to not only recruit new providers, but to also retain the ones we have left.

#NEW: "We see the consequences around us every day. Patients are waiting longer for appointments, driving hours for care or being sent out of state for care. Physicians are choosing to practice in other states with less hostile malpractice laws."

New Mexico has a very real health care crisis. (1)

NM is an outlier compared to other states when it comes to our medical malpractice system. NM has more large claims (above $500,000) per 1,000 physicians than our neighboring states and the national average.

This makes it difficult to recruit and retain health care workers.💔

#THREAD: Just how bad is the health care provider shortage in New Mexico? Some may not think the shortage is that bad, but as Margaret O'Hara writes, NM's health care landscape is ominous if policy reforms are not adopted. (1)
