Octavia Butler was told at a very young age by an aunt “Don’t write sci fi, no one will read it” so she didn’t. She didn’t write anything for decades and then realized she could write whatever she wanted.

True, but if you’re told in HS that “don’t write that, you’ll never be taken seriously” and then stopping isn’t necessarily a lack of thick skin, but of “I’m a kid and they are an adult.”

It makes me sad to think of all the potential great novels that were squashed because a writing teacher said “don’t write that, it’s genre fiction and it’ll never be taken seriously and won’t be published.”

I’ve heard so many stories about people in writing classes who were told “don’t write genre fiction” who then went on to write amazing sci-fi, horror, fantasy novels. The list keeps growing longer and longer!

I knew it! He always tried a little too hard to be the most dull man ever.

It could lead me to a house with the name “No one has ever left this house alive” and I’d still walk in if there was a trail of free books.
