Military emissions take the lead, with 82 MtCO₂e since 2022, driven by fuel-hungry heavy vehicles, steel, and concrete for fortifications. Rebuilding damaged infrastructure follows with 62 MtCO₂e. A fast-growing third source: fires, which released 25.8 MtCO₂e in 2024.

Adaptations can help cocoa farmers respond to changing conditions, but they can't fully prevent disruptions in the production of cocoa. Adaptations include breeding plants that are more resistant to heat and drought, planting taller trees among cacao to create shade.

Threats to the future of cocoa production go beyond the direct impacts of changes in temperature and rainfall. Illegal mining, smuggling, and the spread of cacao swollen shoot virus through mealybug infestations are also impacting the quantity and quality of cacao harvests.

Changes in rainfall account for much of the year-to-year variation in production, such as in 2024 when inconsistent rainfall patterns led to a globally-felt cocoa price hike.

Cameroon and Nigeria experienced, an average of 18 and 14 additional days per year of cacao-limiting heat because of climate change, respectively
February 12, 2025 at 4:16 PM
In Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana, climate change added about 40 days per year with daily maximum temperatures above 90°F, on average during the past 10 years.

Climate Central analyzed how human-caused climate change has affected the frequency of daily maximum temperatures above 90°F in West Africa’s cocoa belt over the past 10 years (2015-2024).

Prices of cocoa surged by 136% between July 2022 and February 2024, and climate extremes in West Africa’s cocoa belt, which produces 70% of the world’s cocoa.

The second study, published Monday in the same journal, found that near-Herculean efforts to achieve emissions cuts would be needed now to avoid exceeding the 1.5-degree goal. Study: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
A year above 1.5 °C signals that Earth is most probably within the 20-year period that will reach the Paris Agreement limit - Nature Climate Change
What a first year with temperature 1.5 °C above the pre-industrial baseline implies for long-term temperature goals is unclear. Here the authors show that such a first year above the baseline is highl...

In the journal Nature Climate Change, Alex Cannon of Environment and Climate Change Canada finds about an 80% chance that the world has already breached the 1.5-degree target when it comes to the long-term warming level. Study: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Twelve months at 1.5 °C signals earlier than expected breach of Paris Agreement threshold - Nature Climate Change
The 12 months before July 2024 were more than 1.5 °C warmer than the pre-industrial baseline. Using climate models, the author shows that the first year that exceeds 1.5 °C of warming most probably al...
