As @katharinehayhoe.com puts it, “On 1.5C and 2C, what the science says is very clear: neither of these are magic thresholds, every bit of warming matters.”

Cop29 progress on these items aren’t looking great - at all - so heading into week 2 with much fear…

And that’s COP29 in brief!

There are many resources for people to follow along and not forgetting amazing programming at Pavilions like the Singapore Pavilion (cop-pavilion.gov.sg)

But webcasts for many Pavilions exist, you can find them in my newsletter theweirdandwild.substack.com

Finally, mitigation and adaptation. These are the ways to reduce the amount of planet-warming emissions in the atmosphere, and managing the impact of climate change to reduce the damage on communities.

There are so many things to discuss here, but pay attention to the Global Goal on Adaptation. /7

speaking about climate targets we need to talk about transparency.

As countries set climate targets (nationally determine contributions in COP jargon), how do you know if they are making progress, what they’re doing to achieve progress, and the country’s actual emissions.

Enter the BTR. /6

And carbon markets or in COP jargon, Article 6.

This is crucial in helping countries meet their climate targets, especially if they have limited decarbonisation opportunities.

but to allow countries to trade “carbon“, clear rules must be set on how this can be done transparently and fairly. /5

Next up, loss and damage.

What do vulnerable countries and communities stand to lose due to the impacts of climate change.

But not for lack of trying to manage these impacts, it sometimes goes beyond what they can adapt to.

But these communities often contribute the least to climate change. /4

First agenda item, the acronym that baffled me, NCQG.

Basically this is the shiny new toy in climate finance because an old goal lapsed and didn’t do so well. More here /3
