By 61%-17% people think it is unacceptable to pay the Taliban to return migrants to Afghanistan, according to YouGov. It is 50%-35% among 2024 Reform voters (though note that the question wording did not specify this as a Reform policy).

It also means that some pollsters are now putting the Lib Dems very close to, or even sometimes tied or ahead of, the Conservatives. There is quite some variation between pollsters on this, however. A large batch of pollsters gives the Conservatives a consistent half a dozen or so points margin over the Lib Dems while YouGov, Techne and Find Out Now have the Lib Dems breathing down the necks of the Conservatives. Overall, the Lib Dem poll rating is now averaging just under 15% and is the party’s best ratings, saving for the Brexit boomlet of 2019, since July 2010. The poll rating is also double what it was this time in the last Parliament, and has been creeping up steadily all year.

Just over half of Britons support making it easier for skilled people to move to the UK (56% support vs 16% oppose) and reducing the number of visas given to immigrants coming to the UK (54% support vs 17% oppose).

It is possible that all three of these stories have the same next step: either populists triumphing (winning elections in Canada and Australia while Trump’s ratings plateau or even improve), or the populists having their unpopularity vividly demonstrated (losing those two elections and seeing Trump fall below even his first term ratings). If it is a hattrick one way or the other, that would be quite the dramatic pattern for populists.
