The issue has to be settled politically in the UK first. Otherwise a new gov will just scrap everything, a waste of time for the EU.
EU govs will be demanding, not just pro-Putin ones. This is why relationship builiding is important.
So 5 years of alignment, with an improved FTA, then apply.

The benefits of the UK in the CU are not what people think they would be, it would not solve the problems the UK now has.
EFTA membership would not be approved.
The problem the UK has to solve, is settling the issue within the UK politically - that opens the doors, but is not possible at the moment.
