I have a few questions since you’ve seen a lot of the season: 1) Fans are making an allegory to AI based on the ChatGPT-like virus people and the end credits “Made by Humans” message, but given how long ago VG conceived of this idea, I’m a touch skeptical that “the spirit-crushing inevitability of AI” was the primary creative genesis for the show. Do episodes 3-7 go a route that reinforces these AI themes, or do you think we’ll be surprised? 2) On Twitter/X, my feed has a lot of overlap between the Severance fandom and Plur1bus. How would you compare the experiences of digesting the two shows as a viewer? My first thought would be that Severance leans much more into the “mystery box” of the world, but I do see similarities in the rich character studies both shows dive into. 3) Which episode coming up has the most memorable sequence for you? reply from Andrew Webster: 1) yeah i think vince gilligan just hates AI, that's where the credits message came from, so i'm not sure if this is really an allegory, especially since he's been thinking about the concept for many years 2) the shows are pretty different, but i guess the vibes are similar, with the slow burn mystery. but yeah severance has lots of little mysteries, whereas pluribus has one central thing it's focused on 3) talk to me after episode 6 :)

Q from Jack64X: Do you think the Ally / Ally X would run better with SteamOS...? A from Sean Hollister: Almost certainly, if by "run better" you're talking performance and pick-up-and-play ease of use. The PC makers tell me their customers want Windows, though, and maybe that's true! But yes, with the Lenovo Legion Go S, we saw the same hardware with SteamOS run better than Windows, and I vastly preferred using Bazzite on the original ROG Ally X to using Windows there.

Trans people simply want to be left to their own devices and engage in boring activities such as using restrooms, being allowed to work in peace, and posting on social media, but apparently, such is not to be.

Lawmakers and others who influence policy, citing “transgender ideology,” are pushing for a world where talking about transgender people in any context is being treated as “adult material,” equating existing while trans to pornography, something that could put individual hosts and disseminators of information at risk as well as threatening the existence of these resources. Restricting the presence of, and access to, online trans culture through measures such as age verification laws is designed to suppress transness itself.

This approach doesn’t have to be all or nothing. In a recent essay, trans author Margaret Killjoy coins the term “demiground” to describe what a post-internet hybrid activism might look like. The idea of this paradigm is to compartmentalize your online / offline life into multiple discrete boxes, all with varying degrees of visibility and measured risk. Your “A” life includes all your social media with your most “palatable” / non-spicy persona, providing cover for your “B” and “C” lives, which prioritize in-person communication and unfold with different levels of public obscurity (and sometimes legality). The goal isn’t to retreat from online spaces and give fascists what they want, but to create a more disciplined level of control over your digital footprint. “In order to populate the demiground, we need to make it as inviting as possible,” Killjoy writes. “It needs to be clear that not only is there political value in being obscure to the state, but that it is also a better and more fulfilling way to live.”

She’s pointing to a cruel irony: the content that could help trans people is often the most vulnerable to disappearing, while the content that could hurt us gets preserved forever by those who wish us harm. Support forums vanish when companies fold. Transition timelines disappear when YouTube changes its policies. But screenshots of old tweets? Those live forever in the folders of people who want us gone.

It’s a controversial take, especially for an AI CEO. For as long as AI has been around, it’s been used in ways that disproportionately affect minorities and vulnerable populations — ranging from wrongful arrests to AI-generated revenge porn. OpenAI has some guardrails for Sora in place, but if history — and the last week — is any guide, people will find ways to get around them. Watermark removers are already proliferating online, with some people using “magic eraser”-type tools and others coding their own ways to remove the watermark convincingly. For now, text prompts don’t allow for generating a specific face without permission, but people have allegedly already gotten around that rule to generate close-enough approximations of someone to instill fear or make threats, and to make suggestive videos, including videos of women holding dildo-like objects.

Younger people are getting their news from TikTok and Instagram in ever-greater numbers, and they trust institutional media less than ever. CBS in particular — that’s your new company, now — has the oldest audience in primetime TV. These folks aren’t The Free Press’ assiduously courted “classical liberals,” either. It’s normie grandparents, a bunch of whom are planning to appear at the next No Kings rally. I might invoke Edward R. Murrow, but they remember him. They don’t have any goodwill toward you. They don’t know who you are at all. And they are not going to defend you when you screw up.
