There's probably a thread on this somewhere on Twitter.

(And I'm glad you're writing so much about T&S tonight. I'm assuming it means your body isn't giving you *too* much shit right now)

Eh I just think he's even more of an idealist than I am, and we like to dream.

(By the way, what are your thoughts on the Santa Clara Principles?)

This is why I'm hoping composable choose-your-own moderation would reduce the need for enforcement at the platform level. I know you said it was a shitshow (although I only have a vague idea how), but I've always regarded Bluesky as being an experiment at creating a new type of social network.

I would say it's more important than "There is some use", but otherwise yeah.

Something something Kairi Aegis I guess, but of course you would have a better idea of exactly *how* it was a shitshow better than me.

On the other hand, I'm a bit surprised at how popular that kind of stuff is (various now-banned subreddits, liveleak etc.)
November 15, 2025 at 4:18 AM
Setting that aside, how do you even ensure one person, one vote? Even I, ever the idealist, don't really think elections are workable for online communities (except maybe non-binding polls)

As an aside, Reddit doesn't do this: the user's profile is replaced with a message of course, but posts and comments are not hidden unless they are specifically removed.
November 15, 2025 at 3:42 AM
One thing I find annoying is that when an account is suspended, all of their posts are hidden, even those that do not break the rules. I understand why it has to be that way, but that does not make it less annoying to me as an end-user.

I think outcomes matter too. I've been saying this a lot today, but I really think Bluesky means it when they say they only issue permanent suspensions as a last resort. But people are so used to platforms defaulting to permbans that they don't believe it.
November 15, 2025 at 1:41 AM
Of course. On the other hand, I'm still suprised by the sheer number of users who signed up for now-banned subreddits like r/watchpeopledie, r/gore etc.
November 15, 2025 at 1:31 AM
Ooh don't think I've heard that one before! Hopefully Story Time soon?
November 15, 2025 at 1:23 AM
IMO a big part of it is people not knowing whether it was a temporary or permanent suspension and reacting as if it was a permaban.

It feels like a lot of disconnect comes from the fact that what makes sense as operable policies for a scaled social media site has low relevance to what makes sense as norms for healthy society, despite our expectation that these should have more of a relationship.

I'm not too familiar either. I just vaguely know of it but you can search for yourself
November 14, 2025 at 6:53 PM
Actually I remember a second exception (Bill Kezos) but maybe that one was a bit more justified
November 14, 2025 at 5:44 PM
Everyone is reacting like it's a permaban cause no one knows for sure that it's not
November 14, 2025 at 5:40 PM
They need to specify whether it's a temp or perma ban, but they're working on it
November 14, 2025 at 5:29 PM
Yeah that's the one notable exception
November 14, 2025 at 5:08 PM
People are reacting as though it's a permaban because they don't know whether it is or not (probably not but there's no confirmation).
November 14, 2025 at 4:59 PM
I've heard people mention this but I don't remember the specific incident
November 14, 2025 at 4:38 PM
I think it's simply because "ban" is shorter and easier to type
November 14, 2025 at 4:36 PM
Yeah that really is the one notable exception to "we only permaban as a last resort". It's also not a good look that it happened in the middle of drama involving the CEO.
November 14, 2025 at 4:35 PM
People are reacting as if it's a permanent suspension, which I agree would be excessive. Which is why Bluesky should specify whether a ban is temporary or permanent (they're working on it though)
