Been playing Stasis: Bone Totem and it's creepy and scary but maybe the scariest thing was a directory being created by the game on my drive's root and the dev is "The Brotherhood" so it just stood up out of no where on me. I was like "What is this creepypasta thing doing here?"
A view of my hard drive's root directory. Several folders are ones I've put there like "Steam Library", "Video Backups", "Video Projects", "WAV Backups". But amidst it all is a folder in all caps reading "THE BROTHERHOOD". I really didn't expect that to be there so it just caught me off guard.

@gscgameworld.bsky.social really knocked the Cordon out of the park in this sequel. It exists both as an incredible piece of nostalgic craft work while doing nothing in particular to draw out the ire of criticism about how nostalgia is weaponized. It's also just gorgeous. Can't stop taking pictures.

The road in the middle is dirt, and practically flooded from rainwater and those who have walked its path over the decades. At the end of the trail, the ground slopes upwards. The brush nearly sits at half your height and above the sloped ground is a massive concrete wall, cordoning off the zone. It's cold, the sky is a foggy blue that reveals no clouds nor sun. It's raining. A yellow and green sloped hillside. Trees and brush dot the landscape near the top of the slow. In the center of the frame is an underground bunker door, the doors are open and the light inside is on. The door slopes into the landscape in such a way to feel as if it is one with the hill. It's daytime, blue skies and white puffy clouds are visible. Shadows are cast across two aisles of houses, mostly worn down from the elements, rooftops barely holding anymore. Two men in armor, holding firearms stand before you. They're on watch. It's dark, foggy, it's raining. Before you lies what feels like an endless forest of small trees that you could easily fit your arm around and hug from the side. As a sequel to a game I've played, these trees weren't here when I first visited the Cordon in 2008, not at this density and detail at least. In that game, zone "walls" were fairly easy to comprehend, often dotted with barbed wire or walls that couldn't possibly be scaled. Instead now there's a forest, the boundaries probably there despite this game having only one load screen for the whole game map, it has its "funnels" for moving between major chunks, those funnels mostly being roads. However I cannot underestimate how this feels like returning to a place I've tread a thousand times and finding it more beautiful than I ever could see before. Because technology has changed and time has past.

Update with screenshots from last night (one I had to nab from a YouTube vid because I wasn't fast enough). The documentary makes this scene feel so poignant. Richter asks you what you think of the Zone at this point and this was the answer I picked. I love metaphors like this in games.
It's night, you stand on a construction crane with Richter in front of you, a beautifully cloudy moonlit night with the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the distance. Your character responds to Richter asking what you think of the Zone by saying "It's a chance...to turn my life around. Although, it looks like it's going straight to hell right now." Richter's reply to you: "I know it might seem like the Zone is nothing but darkness to you now, Skif. But trust me, it's always sunny in Prypiat. You'll see the other side of the Zone soon enough."

These changes on the other hand I think I can get behind. I like how absolutely dangerous the Bloodsucker has been so I'll wait to see how that feels. Boar packs though have been a great reminder of how easy it is to die in this world, they attack in packs way more in this game so good choice.
A list of monster/combat balance changes to STALKER 2: Reduced some mission items' weight (including weight of scanners) Slightly rebalanced Bloodsucker’s damage. Decreased Bloodsucker’s strike protection rank (more damage from guns). Reduced Boodsucker’s HP regeneration outside the combat. Controller HP is moderately reduced. Burer HP is moderately reduced. Boar HP is moderately reduced. Flesh HP is moderately reduced. Damage to Boar from headshots changed to 100% of body damage. Damage to Boar from shots to the limbs is increased. Damage to Flesh from shots to the limbs is increased. Significantly increased weapon melee distance. Slightly increased knife melee distance.

Not sure how I feel about these changes. I actually had my first moment where I went and did random quests for money and almost emptied my wallet paying for repairs. It felt appropriately difficult to face down those trade-offs. I'd take one of the changes, but both at once feels strong? We'll see.
A list of changes made to STALKER 2 today, highlighted you'll find "Weapons and armor repair cost is decreased" and "Money reward for most missions is increased from 2-3 times". Both of these go hand in hand as in they help players have more money in their wallet as money isn't siphoned from them as often or in such large amounts and players will get more money way more quickly.

SOUP 4: Alton Brown's "Pantrified Tomato Soup". I really liked how this one turned out. Last year's creamy smooth Tomato Soup was good but maybe had too much cream added. The extra ingredients really layer flavors well here.

Story time. I took a break from my focused list of video games for October spookies. I played Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened first. Took about 16 hours. I've played the last two Frogwares releases as well in the last two years (Sherlock: Chapter One and The Sinking City).

SOUP 3: Sort of a stew honestly but it's just a hodgepodge of normal mirepoix with the add of mushrooms, beef, and tomatoes simmered with a Parmesan rind to add some umami. And tri color rotini. Coulda maybe mixed the mushrooms or the beef, one or the other.

I don't know why but hard clean audio points like this across multiple tracks are aesthetically pleasing.
Two audio tracks in REAPER, a red square highlights how if you zoom in close enough you can see individual audio points as dots across the lines and they cut squarely from sound to no sound at the same point on both tracks despite being different sources of sound.

Almost 10 years ago a friend shared an interview online that was really fascinating. The site was entirely interviews. Eventually I got in touch with the person behind the project, we spoke several times and now that project has resulted in a book out now, a decade after GamerGate. Check it out.
