And I hope it is not controversial to see Jesus in the least of his children, those most in need of mercy and intervention. And I hope each of us answer the call to intervene on their behalf, in whatever way we can.

There is an irony in the fact that Bethlehem today is under military occupation, just as it was when Jesus was born. There is tragedy in the fact that Palestinians seeking shelter from relentless bombing are fleeing to Egypt, just as Mary and Joseph did to escape Roman soldiers.
