Untouchable, but I'm forcing you to feel me.
Once they inducted Al Michaels and Bob Costas, it became clear that fame mattered way more than actually broadcasting baseball

As much as Hollywood loves seeing representations of how tough and zany it is to work in Hollywood?

This movie is going to get so many Oscar nominations for the same reason The Studio won all the Emmys
December 10, 2025 at 5:29 PM
Oh man, Vizquel is going to end up getting in

Depends on your goals. If a writer has any kind of niche or following, finding 1,000 people to give you $50 a year seems infinitely achievable. The thing that makes it impossible is to be a new writer trying to build that audience.

I feel very confident that the triple whammy of a post-strike juiced ball, expanding twice in five years, including three new NL teams, and the trend toward smaller stadiums all played a much, much bigger role in offense than anything steroids did for the exact reason you mentioned
December 8, 2025 at 10:16 PM
I loathe the Brady Anderson example and other players like Luis Gonzalez because they are premised entirely on the idea that a player took steroids, had amazing results, and then decided that actually, nevermind, instead of the much more obvious concept that the league was juicing the ball

I'm not insulting anyone specifically, just the entire culture of the New York Yankees community

It must be tough to be so aggrieved at all times

Part of being a boss is the requirement of taking the higher ground because that's part of what you're paid for. Taking every single work slight personally and responding turns you into Michael Scott

By this definition, literally every post with a link is clickbait. Sharing a relative's obituary? Clickbait! A municipality posting a meeting agenda? Clickbait! A school district announcing a snow day? You better believe that's clickbait!

Weirdly, Pettitte is one of the less deserving of a pass because he actually lied about his PED use multiple times and only ever confessed each time he was caught in the lie: www.nbcsports.com/mlb/news/con...

Mostly, I'm just talking about this specific result and why Jeff Kent getting inducted today felt as inevitable as Fred McGriff's induction two years ago and Lee Smith's in 2019. They all have really things to point to that, on the surface, feel Hall-worthy
December 8, 2025 at 1:11 AM
I was just scanning the upcoming people who will be rolling off the BBWAA ballot in the coming years, and Andy Pettitte is the only one who ~might~ get the old-school support because of his postseason resume.
December 8, 2025 at 1:09 AM
In the BBWAA, sure, but looking at the makeup of the Veterans Committee, it seems pretty easy to figure out how Jeff Kent got 12 votes.
December 8, 2025 at 1:07 AM
I agree, but I also think if half the voters are people used to citing RBI and ERA, Kent's case is a lot easier to understand. Whitaker's career requires a belief in the accuracy of WAR and understanding how all the pieces fit
December 8, 2025 at 1:07 AM
Kent's case is "Most homers by a second baseman." Whitaker's case requires an acceptance of the accuracy of WAR and an understanding of the value of its different components. Based on his traditional stats, nothing jumps out as an immediate HOFer the way that Kent's homers do.
December 8, 2025 at 1:05 AM
This felt inevitable to me. Something as simple as "Most homers in history by a second baseman" is old-school catnip, the same way "McGriff would have had 500 homers and already been in if it weren't for the strike" and "Jack Morris pitched to the score" was.
December 8, 2025 at 1:02 AM
I think Whitaker deserves to be in, but his case is way harder to make than Kent
December 8, 2025 at 12:58 AM
His vote total was shocking, but I really think this particular group of voters were assembled as hard-line anti-PED people, so I wouldn't be surprised if Delgado benefited from the "He did it clean" crowd and this ends up being his high water mark
December 8, 2025 at 12:57 AM
This is super easy to explain: Kent got in because of the homers
December 8, 2025 at 12:55 AM
America, as a whole, lost this skill pretty much the moment Donald Trump came down that escalator in 2015, and getting mad at bad tweets is pretty much the official platform of the left
December 7, 2025 at 10:41 PM
I'll always remember him as the guy who signed A-Rod to that monster contract and then blamed A-Rod for signing the contract as he ran him out of town
December 7, 2025 at 4:58 PM
Dick Allen is also 1-for-21, 0-14 with the BBWAA (actually fell off the ballot his first year and then was reinstated) and then got in on his 7th veterans committee
December 7, 2025 at 2:50 PM
When you have the opportunity to have Bob Costas talk about how much worse baseball is now compared to the days of his youth when Mickey Mantle swatted 900-foot homers while wearing an onion on his belt, you just gotta do it
