Or why worry about negotiating? If the president can unilaterally sequester funds, why not just agree to whatever the democrats want today and tomorrow just say, “Yeah. We’re not really going to give those Obamacare subsidies”

Given the “supreme executive” take by the SCOTUS, does the shutdown matter. The president is the head of the treasury, he can just direct the treasury to disburse money.

Given all the comparisons to 1930’s-1940’s Germany, I have to wonder if the German government in those days also burned down every government department indiscriminately. The Germans seem to be a people pretty well versed in logistics. I assume at some point, the US needs these agencies to do things
