There is widespread potential for thunderstorms across B.C. today. Building on the hot, dry conditions experienced on Saturday, we anticipate this will lead to more aggressive fire behaviour across the southern Interior. Lightning can be accompanied by precipitation or in some cases no rain at all based on the type of weather pattern, existing atmospheric conditions, or if the strike is outside the rain. When lightning moves through an area that has experienced hot and dry conditions, the amount of accompanying precipitation will affect how quickly the fire will be visible to the public. Ignition points can grow quickly into wildfires, presenting a challenge to suppression efforts. In areas with damper conditions, a lightning strike may cause ignition but not immediately grow into a fire. The heat can remain underground for several days, or even weeks. Then as the weather dries out and heats up they can flare up to become full-fledged wildfires. Lightning is the leading cause of wildfire during the summer months. Our latest ten-year average tells us that 35.3% of wildfires are human-caused, while lightning is responsible for 64.7%.

As #canadaday wound out, I was enjoying the twilight. I am so impressed with the people visiting our beaches.

These can include stiff body and seizure-like movement. Administer naloxone, even if you’re in doubt. It won’t cause harm and it can save a life.
