This is a podcast about how the great songs that define our lives came to be: the influences, the musical history, different versions of the song, and why the music just keeps us coming back to listen again and again. Controversial opinions included.

All rules were broken if it made it more danceable, and the competition was stiff. Normal record length? Pshaw! This wasn't music for radio programming, this was for Friday night at the Top Rank, the Trocadero, The Camden Palace, and there WERE no time limits (last orders at 2:30am).

The Village People and Sylvester were celebrating gay culture in their music unapologetically as a reflection of this - the dance floor was theirs to own.

Disco music turned its back on the serious rock & prog music of the late 60s and early 70s and said "See ya boys, I'm off to dance!"
It took soul, funk, and jazz, with a simple beat but fairly complex jazz harmonies, & melted up a genre all of its own - with one intention - TO MAKE YOU MOVE.

You can't isolate Disco from the prevailing socio-political culture of the time, nor should you want you. Without it, the electronic sounds of the 80’s would never have happened, & the genre underpins the liberation of queer and trans movements whilst engendering racial integration in social spaces.

Do you think you know disco? Do you think it’s all “I will survive” and “The Hustle”? Well, Bill and I are crazy about Disco. So it is with great joy, that we declare November to be Disco Month.
