One of my favorite tricks with younger players is to have some paper and colors on the table. When something happens in the game that's unusual or exciting, invite them to draw it! Let them spend 10 minutes drawing and explaining the art before moving on. This is a good reset and builds investment.

True, as DM we often don't have time to do a call/respond routine.

I think either is fine, TBH. But I can't communicate for my player to deduct 12 hit points without mechanical language. Conditions have names that can be used in a sentence and still fully convey the mechanics (assuming the player's read the rules) without intruding on the narrative.

I think it's more about saying "you are Paralyzed" instead of "You have the Paralyzed condition."

One of my favorite things to do is to have these shop keepers either betray them to the authorities or else guess at the party's motivation wrong, allowing for an awkward interaction with a seemingly "meaningless" NPC. Helps the world feel more alive!

Ex. The Rogue wants to use a flashback point to replace an Animal Handling check with a Slight of Hand while trying to bypass a guard dog. Flash back to earlier when they attempted to lift a command whistle the dog trainer uses to train the pups.
