Oh without a doubt. I don’t know why I’m surprised.

I agree. This relationship was special.

I was shocked at how women were treat but also by the attitudes of her friends towards her when she tried to break free of the oppression.

I think for me it was how she was treat when she was in Austria and everything she experienced there. It reminds me unfortunately how of people are treating the asylum seekers in my country now.

Will there be a December to finish the year on?

Agreed!

I definitely think they/them would be more appropriate now but I don’t think it was even considered as a pronoun in the 60s.

I spent a lot of time especially the first half of the book confused. I didn’t feel like things were explained very well and I had so many questions. I saw this is the 4th in the series so maybe if I read the others first it might explain some things?

They would turn around and head straight home. This world is a huge mess right now 😣

Estraven’s ending. Was it intentional? Why? Definitely didn’t expect it and had a little cry.

I love how it fits with the current lgtbq movement and non binary individuals.

I agree especially with this book. She was creating her own universe not trying to predict the future. Sci fi is a way to create and explore alternative realities but there are always people looking for hints towards our future.

I honestly couldn’t. I’m still confused 😂 It really bugged me that she didn’t explain what it was.

In my work as a therapist I have met people who have said similar things actually so that makes a lot of sense.

I was really nervous throughout as I had no idea if she was going to survive or if something really disturbing was going to happen. Then I was flooded with relief when she was finally rescued.

The scene where she gets sick from the water the first time as I was literally just recovering from my own food poisoning. Her strength and resilience to keep going through everything she went through was incredible. I don’t know if I would’ve been strong enough.

I honestly hadn’t put much thought into the significance of the first sentence before but reading the comments I’m definitely going to take more notice going forward with the books I read. I really enjoy the talking points and questions you put forward in this club as it gets my brain working again.
