I replied with something sarcastic because I wasn't really in the mood for it, and they offered what I think was supposed to be some kind of apology? I don't think they were expecting a reply, probably thought I was long-dead.

for some reason we were doing the original Du Maurier story in English class and I suppose it was a sort of 'compare and contrast' thing. Around the same time they also traumatised us with Day of the Triffids (fear of plants) and horrifically bleak nuclear war film Threads (scarred for life).
