I was really chuffed when Klára Hrdá from the Czech Republic asked me to sign a copy of my book The Seed Detective, which has been translated into Czech. We were attending the Let's Liberate Diversity Forum in Diekirsch, Luxembourg. She was there with her grassroots seed library programme Seminkovna

After just 48 hours these home saved Syrian courgette seeds have germinated. They are from a 2016 harvest of a variety I collected in Aleppo in 2011 and of a white type held by the Irish Seed Savers and given to me by Liam Gaffney. Interesting to see their different morphology and to cross.

The spring Equinox is my favourite day of the year because for the next 6 months days are longer than nights and also, my new book The Accidental Seed Heroes is published on this auspicious day too!

If you want to save seeds for many years keep them dry, cool and in the dark. These 20+ years old chilli seeds have been kept in an envelope in an airtight box in my fridge

A rather lovely conjunction of Venus and the moon. Maybe the last time I shall see them this close for another month!

Some news I would like to share. My first book, The Seed Detective, was about where our veggies have come from and their place as history on a plate. My new book, The Accidental Seed Heroes, is about a counter revolution in breeding and conservation, which puts people, place, and planet first.

Parthenocarpy, the condition where a plant produces seedless fruits is common with aubergines (egg plants to my American friends). This fruit is Sorten Raven, (black raven in Danish), an open source cultivar bred by Søren Holt in Denmark to be grown outside. I have a few seeds left to try in 2025🤞

Yum! With the climate warming and extreme weather more common growing this gorgeous chilli Capsicum pubescens (aka the Rocotto chilli) is my way of ensuring I can harvest fresh chillies in a cold greenhouse between June and February. It is a semi-hardy perennial, fruity with plenty of heat

I met Peni Edeker at the WRFFC and was mightily impressed with a session she hosted on making biochar and bio fertiliser both at farm and garden scale. I have signed up for her course on 19th July. Others might find it a day well spent too

My first post! I am attending the Wales Real Food and Farming Conference and hanging out with some great seed savers from the Wales Seed Hub who are growing local varieties for us all to enjoy. Hoping some delegates might like to buy our books too!
