🌏 Blue-and-white flycatcher (Cyanoptila cyanomelana) The blue-and-white flycatcher, also known as the Japanese flycatcher, is a striking migratory songbird in the Old World flycatcher family. Males boast glossy ultramarine blue upperparts and white underparts, often with black lores and throat. Females are duller, typically brownish-grey with a rufous tinge. They are widely distributed across East Asia, breeding in temperate forests and wintering in Southeast Asia. This species is generally solitary, foraging for insects in the mid-canopy and undergrowth, often making sallies from a perch to catch prey in flight. 2.5 Flash (Edited) Two subspecies are recognised. 🌏 Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata) The male Mandarin Duck is strikingly colourful, with a red bill, white eye-stripe, reddish "whiskers", a purple breast with white bars, ruddy flanks, and distinctive orange "sails" on its back. Females are more subdued, greyish-brown with a white eye-ring. Native to East Asia, established feral populations exist in the UK and parts of Europe, stemming from escaped captive birds. They prefer wooded ponds and rivers. Mandarin Ducks are generally shy, perching in trees, and often form small flocks. They nest in tree cavities.
