TIm showed up with the first three Harriet 7"s: High Risk Group, Linda Smith & Fertile Virgin.

And we gave him a copy of our summer single, “Paperchase”, which he played on his Walkman on the train home.

Sleeve of “Paperchase” / “Kirsty” cassette single by the Rosslyns, recorded at Howard’s house in Heybridge, Essex and self-released in summer 1990 in a limited edition of… low single figures. Expect the photo came from a Sunday supplement. It’s black and white in part because they didn’t do colour photocopying at the local library. I think my dad had an electric typewriter which I typed the band name on before glueing it on to the sleeve. Both tracks (much) later appeared on the compilation CD “All We Ever Did Was Try” on Harriet Records (available from all good stockists and streaming services etc).

Back one last time to the 35th anniversary thread, with the final act of The Rosslyns mk. I: our interview with Incite!

When Tim from Harriet Records came round for tea and toast, and listened to the new songs that he would release 32 years later.
Photograph of the Rosslyns interview in issue #18 of Incite! fanzine, from Cambridge, MA. This issue arrived in November 1990. Still incredible to us that not all that long after Tim had taken out Galaxie 500 for a pizza, and on the same trip to England that he met up with indiepop superstars like Gregory Webster & Liz Price, he came round to my parents’ house (they were away) and interviewed us. I said a few (mildly) idiotic things, but that’s the passion of youth for you… The interview would actually be pretty much the last thing that particular Rosslyns line-up ever did! We played Tim a number of new tracks, also giving him a copy of our severely-limited edition “Paperchase” cassingle which (like some of the other tracks) would eventually get released by Harriet Records in 2022, on SPY 16. Forever respect to Tim, obviously.

Also found a lovely handwritten note from Stewart which included an Elvis Costello quote: “fame usually disappoints but music rarely does”. Amen The Shop Assistants / The Chesterf!elds split flexi (GPV 007). “Home Again” / “Nose Out Of Joint”. “33 1/3 RPM Brought to you by: THE GOLDEN PATHWAY THE SUBWAY ORGANIZATION (and) THE LEGEND!)” Overpowering / Looking For An Answer split (Power It Up / Lokos Records / Victim Records / Controversy / Colapso Inminente) 5 tracks from each band on gold-ish vinyl. LFAA one of my favourite Spanish grindcore bands Slow Down Tallahassee / Standard Fare split (Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation SPC 024), on cherry red vinyl Roughneck Jihad / Lex Boogie From The Bronx split (Boot Records) Both tunes featuring Senz Beats. “Catastrophe” [DJ Jazz T remix)” b/w “War Of The Worlds”. Still one of the best British record labels out there Kano / Vybz Kartel “Buss It Up” (no label or other info). On now listening to this I realise it isn’t a split 7” at all but a one-sided Kano/VK collaboration. Still, nobody’s going to read this and notice? Wiley "Ice Rink" 12", picked up from HMV Oxford Street back in the day. No labels, but it contains four versions, respectively with vocals from Kano, Brreeze, Riko and Tinchy Stryder!

A great little article, including that Precious shout-out, and the point it makes on those Napalm Death sessions is absolutely spot on by the way!

This one's very much a personal favourite Peel Session, another one the man himself really liked...
Picture of Amayenge's "The Peel Sessions" 12" on Strange Fruit Records (SFPS 067) released in 1989 (like a lot of these, not all that long after the session was actually recorded). It's in the classic style of Peel Session sleeve which lists hundreds of "artistes and groups who have recorded sessions for the John Peel Shows on Radio 1... Nothing is released without the full approval of the artistes, record companies and, of course, the two Johns [Peel and Walters] without whom..." Chris Chali led a troupe of 12 performing "Chibuyubuyu", "Munise Munise", "Free Nelson Mandela" and "Filiukotuleya" (all self-composed save for "Munise Munise", described as "Traditional (Western Province)". Session produced by Mike Robinson, recorded 5 July 1988 and first aired 12 July 1988. Black vinyl - "Strange Fruit Records / By arrangement with BBC Records and Tapes / AMAYENGE / 45 rpm Stereo Made In England / THE PEEL SESSION (5th July 1988)"

The 1st (and only?) Lion Youth LP may not hit the heights of these two non-album singles (also John Rubie-produced) but it really should be better known.

It eschews the politics for much more of a lovers’ vibe (better showcasing the sweetness of his voice!)

Track on 5-band, train-themed flexi on the Pillarbox Red label, 69p plus SAE. Insert included invitation to buy the Bouquet 7" for £1.60. Miss those days.

Fantastic tune.

Pretty sure that earlier 7" inserts trailed SARAH 22 as "Horseriding" (which became the B-side), so presumably this cracker of a song appeared at some point between the planning stage and sending the tapes to the pressing plant!

A few grime-adjacent candidates for #5debutalbums0004 (Dizzee, Wiley, So Solid) but this one is so slept-on. Raw, garagey, one runaway hit, occasional detours into bleaker, more unsettling territory...

It nonplussed me a little at the time but feels era-defining now.

The ceremony is peppered with the words "fluffy" and "cute", Everett True gets a job on The Sun. Brighter launch their own line in fashionable desert boots Secret Shine go away and publish a manual on cooking with Shell Suits. Harvey begins a new religion, the Sunnies, whose followers hang around in graveyards looking moody. Tramway compose the Official 1994 World Cup England Song. Blueboy win the joint Morrissey / Dave Gedge Lookalike competition. The Hit Parade get really big in Andorra. Sarah Records take over Avon Council's Tourist Board. Buses are set up to take visitors around all the landmarks depicted on sleeves, Sarah 50, etc. Maxwell's Missing Millions are discovered in a suitcase on Clifton Down by Martin Whitehead. All those Subway bands are finally appeased and Subway starts up again, Hooray!
