X-Factor 69 was the last issue prior to Peter David taking over as the series' writer and the penultimate issue in the Muir Island Saga. The crossover saw the end of Chris Claremont's original Uncanny run. This issue is a little uneven but fun.

The story Peter tells isn't a problem. Nor is the "you should speak up" lesson. But the guilt trip that Ben lays at Peter's feet is gross. The shame Peter speaks of can be interpreted as lingering damage inflicted on him by Ben's assertion. Unbelievable.

Full thoughts coming later in Webhead Wednesday...but holy crap is this week's Amazing Spider-Man a thing. What was Kelly thinking? What were the editors thinking?

1993 Valiant house ad

DEATHMATE YELLOW & BLUE

While many Image creators couldn't hit a deadline to save their lives, these Valiant-produced issues shipped right on time. Yellow featured characters appearing with the W.I.L.D.C.A.T.s. Blue's character sets varied.

It's the Phalanx! They had just appeared in their true form for the first time in the previous issue. The Phalanx Covenant was only a few issues away.

Triumph #1 (1995)

This "hero for our times" is so mind-numbingly obsessed with the 90s that it hurts. Triumph seems heavily tied into law enforcement jingoism. The dialogue is so bad that it's kind of impressive in a way.

1992 Valiant house ad

DEATHMATE

Deathmate was the first major universe crossover since 1982. Months of delays on Image's issues, the $4.95 price tag, and retailer over-ordering resulted in so much tied-up money that it is blamed for putting many shops out of business.

I just read this...and boy is it a thing that happened. Not the most accessible first issue, it definitely felt like a product of the "edgy" 90s.

1998 Marvel house ad

Typhoid Mary blows into town, makes Daredevil fall in love with her, drops him off a bridge and leaves him for dead, and becomes an object of Kingpin's affection. This intense arc, featuring Johnny Storm in his "Bad!" tee and cowboy boots, ran from #254-263.

Archie vs Sharknado! If you missed this book, you missed something truly special--an experience that can never be had again.

G.I. Joe #94-96

This somewhat overstates how much of Snake Eyes' past will be revealed. And his new face lasts about an issue and a half. But it's a hell of an ad. Plus, an uncredited J. Jonah Jameson cameo in issue 95.

A lot of leveling in this issue. So much leveling!

Look at that amazing Sam Keith cover! Eclipso The Darkness Within was a fun event anyway, but it had some fantastic covers. This is easily one of my favorites.

Comic of the Day: Terror Inc. #1

This is kind of a mess of a first issue. The opening sequence alternates clumsily between dialogue and caption boxes, and the art during the Terror sequences is dark to the point of opaqueness. Virtually nothing is explained until the end. A tough read.

Gladiator is the perfect Worf Effect character. Wanna show that someone is epically powerful? Just have them break Gladiator's confidence.

I'll go with a pair of more recent books. First appearance of Miles Morales in Ultimate Fallout #4 and first issue of Miles' Ultimate Spider-Man run.

Courtesy of Titan Comics. Picture the Hangover's plot and comedy as made by Quenti Tarantino. Hilariously violent good times.

Worf's Russian stepbrother, Nikolai (who was played by Paul Sorvino in the episode where he first appeared, which was already kind of bizarre) thinks he's a Klingon warrior. I mean, sure, why not.

Look at those shoulder pads! The X-Cutioner has never been a favorite character of mine. An interesting idea that just never leapt off the page.
