When are you operating? I am in ZS2 and propogation between ZS1 and 2 is usually good on 40m in the late afternoon. 73 ZS2VR

Not having to lift a balun to the top is a plus too - I have a small self-made 49:1 impedance transformer on the one end, which I rig to be about 2m(7ft?) Off the ground.

I have had very good success with my EFHW as it is resonant for the most part on 40/20/15/10. In the sort of terrain I have here, not having to drop the mast to change jumpers is the main attraction for me, and as long as you understand the changing radiation patterns, you are good to go.

I can see how that may come across in the US! I'm in Africa and our parks are a bit different to yours! I participate in SOTA here, and my personal preference is an EFHW setup as an inverted V. Others prefer a linked dipole.
