Hi all

We’ve been made aware of a recent/current scabies outbreak in Glasgow. In response we wanted to put out some information and resources for those who might not be aware of how scabies spreads or know what to look for.
Scabies Outbreak in Glasgow! Please Read! (01/07/25) Hi all We’ve been made aware of a recent/current scabies outbreak in Glasgow and possibly elsewhere; there have also been a couple other outbreaks over the past few months. In response we wanted to put out some information and resources for those who might not be aware of how scabies spreads or know what to look for. Exposure and symptoms Scabies primarily spreads through skin-to-skin contact. This includes sexual contact, but could also include cuddling or other close physical contact. It’s less common, but also possible, for it to spread via clothing, bedding, and other soft furnishings. If you haven’t had scabies before, it can take up to 8 weeks for rashes to appear, but it’s still possible to expose others to scabies during this timeframe. It’s important to see a pharmacist as soon as possible after noticing symptoms and contact anyone who may have been exposed within the prior 8 weeks. The main identifying symptoms are burrow marks – small, raised, skin-coloured or silver lines, and lines of bumps with a red dot at the end. Scabies also causes itchiness and rashes which may appear similar to other hives/psoriasis/skin flare ups. It can sometimes be difficult to distinguish between ongoing skin conditions and scabies. If you aren’t sure, a pharmacist should be able to advise. Kink specific info Attendees of play events may also want to consider shared bedding/equipment at those events. The venue we use washes all of their towels and bedding at 60°C, which is recommended. All equipment should also be wiped down between uses. If you aren’t sure if equipment you’re using has been wiped down since last use, it might also be worth wiping down before use as a preventative measure. You may also want to consider discussing with play partners recent (roughly 3 days before play) use of any toys/gear that’s been shared with other people, including leather restraints/straps on shared toys, rope, suede and leather floggers, fur toys and other toys of similar porous materials. General advice for anything that can’t be cleaned is to quarantine in sealed plastic bags for at least three days. It’s important to inform all close contacts who may have been exposed, which likely includes play partners/sexual contacts over the 8 week period prior to you developing symptoms. If you’re informed you may have been exposed, please keep in mind that the exposure was most likely unintentional and by someone who was unaware they were infected. Whilst it’s not unusual to experience shame and guilt after exposure, and whilst being made aware of exposure can be stressful, open communication is essential to managing an outbreak and preventing reinfection. Treatment If you suspect you have scabies, please see a pharmacist and avoid all close physical contact until you’ve received advice. If treatment is prescribed, it’s important for households and close contacts to treat at the same time to prevent reinfection. There’s various guidance available online. This one has a day-by-day checklist and clear instructions on how to treat and avoid reinfection: The main limitation of this guide is it recommends applying treatment from the jawline down – most other sources recommend treating the face and scalp as well.
