I am in TN-07 and while Behn wasn't my choice in the primary, I really don't think her ideology made much of a difference. The GOP would have run the exact same playbook against Bo Mitchell. What ultimately mattered was that Behn brought a ton of energy and enthusiasm to a long-shot campaign.

Did it really not occur to any of these FIVE authors, not to mention the editor, to maybe run this list by an actual mathematician before committing to print?

I remember shopping with my mom in the No Frills aisle of -- was it A&P? Or Pathmark? -- during the late 70s.

This is not totally responsive to your thread but for what it's worth, I live in your district and voted this morning at Lentz. It was much closer than I thought and I was in and out in 5 minutes.

I teach at a university and this article made me think that maybe I should ban laptops in my classroom after all.

I was going to say, our 1940s Southern house is not large but also not at all beautiful. It is haphazardly designed and shoddily built. I wouldn't say that the big new homes around here are beautiful either, but they are generally nicer and much better laid out than our house.

My parents still call it sun-tan cream, which my children find hilarious.

I always think about this too. As a middle-aged mom with lots of mom friends, my anecdata is almost completely in the opposite direction -- wife wants one more baby but husband vetoes because he is DONE.

I am so sorry, Jane. May your mother's memory be a blessing.

What book is this from?

I was going to say the same thing -- this chart should start WAY earlier.

A Suitable Boy is amazing! One of my all-time favorite books.

Have you heard the new one by Tower of Power? My family made me turn it off but IMO it has a certain wacky charm.

There is a fantastic book on this subject, Judging Jehovah's Witnesses, by Shawn Peters.

I do not understand this thing where right wingers are furious when they win. See, also, Alito's majority opinion in Dobbs.

I don't disagree with you in theory, but tearing apart the DOE while also making sure the FAFSA gets out on time and all the states get their Title 1 funds would be really hard. It would require tons of extra work by an already-demoralized workforce. Not sure McMahon could pull this off.

And last week someone asked our governor (whose top priority is a major expansion of school vouchers) about abolishing the DOE. He was like, awesome! just send us the money. His version of "getting rid of the DOE" definitely does NOT include any reduction in federal education $$$.

Yes. The TN GOP supermajority trumpeted that they were going to reject federal funding and free TN from the Oppressive Woke Federal Bureaucrats. Once they learned how much money was involved and what it pays for, they immediately sent the issue to a "task force for further study."

This is why I'm doubtful about some of the names being floated for Ed secretary. That is going to be just an impossible job.

You are absolutely supposed to ask teachers, not "important" people. Indeed Yale *requires* recommendations from teachers of core subjects and explicitly discourages students from sending supplementary recommendations except in very specific circumstances.

Last year the GOP supermajority leg in TN loudly floated rejecting federal education money to get out of from under the Oppressive & Woke DOE. Then they realized just how much money it was and promptly booted the issue to a task force.
