I love an article that includes a great infographic.

But there's also more to unpack than just differential diagnosis' to consider.

We can't think in absolutes.

The more we study the body, the more we'll find things that subvert our theories and expectations.

A breakdown of different sub-group characteristics in mid-portion achilles tendinopathy.

There's some key takeaways.
- There are clear sub-groups
- Each group has a typical set of characteristics and different prognosis that impacts how you’ll communicate and plan their recovery.

‘It’s never just a sprain’ - @liz_bayley_physio were you the original person to say this?

This is an important fact as an estimated 93% of ankle sprains have a comorbid condition alongside ATFL injury!

This could be something that significantly changes your treatment (e.g. fracture),

Your patient has an ankle sprain.

Do you know the predictors of good / not so good outcomes?

What you can do immediately to improve outcomes:

1. Early exercise intervention.
Those who started exercise rehab early had faster recovery, objective stability, subjective stability.

Understanding biomechanics is incredibly useful and something I use every day.

But it can't be practiced in isolation. This is where I think we've gone wrong in the past.

You probably already do many of these tests with your patients following an ankle sprain.

Now with the addition of two outcome measures, (FAAM and ALR-RSI) you can predict at 2 months whether your patient is likely to return to sport or develop chronic ankle instability.
