They hadn't figured out bat speed. Babe Ruth used a variety of bat sizes throughout his career, but one commonly cited was a 36-inch bat that weighed 44 ounces. He also used heavier bats, including one weighing 54 ounces in his early career. He sometimes used bats as light as 40 ounces.
