I sat on Lanikai beach in Hawaii with two of my best friends, and stared out into the Pacific at the Mokulua Islets Seabird Sanctuary, and then we got steak.

I went out on the water a total of 13 times and saw only the glimpse of a grey whale’s fluke one time during a rainstorm. I still haven’t written anything about that experience other than these sentences.

I spent 5 days scouring the shallow shoreline along the Oregon coast for signs of grey whales, hoping for some experience that I still can’t figure out how to articulate that would teach me more about the whales, their maternal structures, and that might give me something to write about.

I listened to Joni Mitchell live at the Hollywood Bowl, which was a deeply holy experience that included cameos from Elton John, Meryl Streep, Annie Lennox, and Jon Batiste.

I helped a dear friend properly dispose of trash and usher in new beginnings.

I drank some drinks at different bars in Madrid with my best girls.

I picked some pretty stunning peonies at a peony farm about an hour outside of Portland.

I saw a sea lion up close off the Oregon coast.
