I think you should tell them about your fur children
As for the feeling of loss & worry you will have to do it again that your mom is concerned about ideally you won't have to deal with that for a long long time and because you went through it with your dog you will be better prepared to face that

you will find your cats will want water from everywhere but the fountain I would keep the lid closed to avoid any accidental falling in.

we do approximate birthdays for ours, like we got Bort at 8 weeks on May 22nd so we say his birthday is March 22nd.
