This print by contemporary Black artist Fred Wilson combines a 16th c engraving of the biblical Queen Esther (who saved the Persian Jews) & a photo of Harriet Tubman, who obvs brought many enslaved Black Americans to freedom, then was a scout/spy in the Civil War & an activist for women's suffrage.

It's been a *hard* year.

I'm guessing that most of the people in your life don't need another scarf?

Could be that they (and you, too, maybe?) could use some liberatory nourishment and fortification for this next chapter, though?

Visual AIDS (incl Philip) began the Red Ribbon project, as well, in 1991. This galvanized awareness of AIDS in an mass-movement way, while ACT-UP did the other crucial work of making ppl uncomfortable. (Every movement that's made real change has both, I think?)

Every 10 minutes in 1991 someone died of AIDS. The tape was the sound of the Riverside Church bell sounding once every 10 minutes.

Electric Blanket -- "Remember AIDS is an International Epidemic" - was first projected on the facade of Cooper Union in 1990.

The bag is also a project of Visual AIDS.

Black women unsurprisingly, are an undeserved demographic here: Black women make up more than 50% of new HIV diagnoses among women in the U.S. This is (your shocked face) a lot about access to health care and other systemic issues. (Button from Visual AIDS)

A mentor-to-be of mine (Philip Yenawine) created A Day Without Art as part of the Visual AIDS collective in 1989. A day to honor the loss of brilliance as a result of the epidemic. 1/x

This year, Trump cancelled recognition of World AIDS Day, today, & cuts to funding worldwide have consequences.

If you or your people need a lunch box to remind them to keep their enemies close and their snacks closer, that's possible now-

Or any number of other things happening here:

Judith Plaskow, on how even the philosophers who are like, "of course God doesn't have a body!!!1!! and God doesn't have EMOTIONS! or any human traits!!!!1!!" still INSIST on using male pronouns for God because what other option would there be????

That whole business about Jesus saying to forgive 70 x 7? Comes in the context of a conversation about "community accountability."

That always gets lost in the conversation, doesn't it.

Ana Mendieta should be a mere 77 years old today.

The Cuban American feminist artist was likely murdered by her husband at 36, in 1985.

May her memory and work be for a revolution. ❤️‍🔥
