I am one of those strange creatures who loves a sickly soft centre when it comes to a tray of chocolates. This mid #1940s Charles James ballgown has always reminded me of a strawberry creme, or is that just me? @metmuseum.org #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

This tailored dolman dating to the late #1880s made by Belgravia tailor Hulbert Beach. Careful pattern arrangement ensures the paisley motifs are symmetrical. I love the deep pleats at the back which must have rippled to reveal the pattern within @jbrightcollection.bsky.social #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Storm Amy is rolling in here today so I propose hot cups of tea all round, a good book & feet up whilst wearing a quilted dressing gown. These were made in Japan in huge numbers for the Western market, quilted & embroidered in a range of floral motifs. Both 1880s #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡 @metmuseum.org

The blurry tiers of gauze that cover the pink underskirt of the late #1850s gown makes the wearer appear transient, as if she is not entirely present but about to shape shift into another dimension. Or is that just me? @mfaboston.bsky.social #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

It is easy to decry garments worn by generations past as we occupy spaces of stretch fabrics but women could move more than we imagine. Here an 1873 tennis dress & an active participant in John Lavery’s 1885 painting ‘Played’ offering a different view @chertseymuseum.bsky.social #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Emile Pingat is one of those early couturiers whose designs cut a swathe across the fashionable world for 30 years & then, without an heir to carry on his work, fell into obscurity. He was often inspired by the past, this early #1880s gown all c18th menswear, Shelburne Museum #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Had there been a world championship in pleating competition in the #1840s then I would propose this unknown maker as a contender. The colour might be vivid but it is the manipulation of the silk that is so striking #ksumuseum #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Views from the train on the way home from a quick visit to Cornwall for a funeral. It’s late afternoon, the carriage is almost empty and the train is flying along. There’s occasional laughter from the end of the carriage.

‘A little chop round the Headland’ Reminds me of the time we hit strong winds when sailing with friends, the mainsail jammed and Vicki and I tried to unjam it. Or rather she did, I was hanging on to the mast for dear life. Painted safely on Millford paper using Schmincke paints. #watercolour #art
