🧩Pieces of the PLF Puzzle🧩
Our set of interconnected programs fill gaps in the public education system, in turn breaking down the many barriers that disadvantaged Cambodian students face in accessing school.
Today's spotlight: English - a crucial skill for higher education and better job prospects.

Another large push in getting boys to plan for their futures has been opening up Vocational Training placements, with a specific focus on TVET programs - courses such as electrical engineering and automotive mechanics. In the last two years, we've awarded 20 such scholarships to male students.

Keeping boys engaged in school also involves focusing them on the future beyond. Our workshop program Career Prep session for middle school students. This is designed to open their eyes to future possibilities and demonstrate that a lot of what they want in life needs 𝙖𝙩 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙩 a high school diploma.

We strive to ensure boys meet as many positive male role models as possible on their journey through school.
Samnang is our full-time student counsellor, leads the middle school section of our mentorship program, and brings a male perspective to workshop topics such as Growth & Change and Bullying.

Providing boys with positive role models is crucial in enabling them to envision the kind of man they want to become. Sadly in the communities where we work, these figures are often missing. We hold workshops on positive parenting that encourage relationship building to address some of these issues.

Our Explore Class is another key STEM strand that we piloted as the first step to addressing the boys' problem - targeting the middle school students most at risk of drop out. This curriculum builds essential digital literacy while bringing project-based learning and bolstering academic knowledge.

Expanding STEM has been a key element in our boys' problem initiative, as boys naturally gravitate to these subjects. Our science classes introduce tactile, hands-on learning as students get to explore science themes that are only taught by text book in their government classes.

Boys are more likely to drop out if they fall behind academically - especially from G6 up.
The remedial classes we introduced to tackle the learning losses due to Covid continue to be effective in ensuring more boys are gaining the foundational knowledge required to pass through to secondary school.

A key strategy in addressing the problem of boys dropping out has been to increase competition activities, such as introducing chess clubs to the libraries at our rural primaries. We're thrilled to see that not only are boys engaging well with the clubs, their book borrowing has also increased!

Students often rate the sessions they receive as part of our workshop initiative as one of the most valuable - and unique - supports in our program offering. Topics intensify as students progress through the grades and are focussed on honing personal and life skills as much as academic goals. 🎯

We do all we can to put STEM in front of our students from an early age - starting in kindergarten with hands-on, playful classics that inspire active learning. 🌟 #STEM #STEMforkids #schoolistheanswer

"I’m so happy to join this helpful workshop! I learned about preparing for university and the Grade 12 exam. Without this workshop, I might choose the wrong major, because we do not get this advice in public school. Now I can think more clearly what I want do do after I finish high school."

"PLF played such an important role when I was a student, helped me to sharpen my goals. Now, I want to give back as much as I can as a mentor for the younger generation. When they see me, they understand that education leads to a better life. Even though I came from a family who is poor like them."

Congratulations to Sokhann on becoming PLF's first female doctor, and is now working in Neonatal Care at Kantha Bopha hospital in Siem Reap! Hailing from a rural farming community, Sokhann is a shining example of how commitment to education can totally transform the trajectory of a young life. 🩺👩‍⚕️💛

Our libraries celebrated Cambodian National Reading Day, which this year was themed "Reading connects all generations" 🇰🇭
We couldn't agree more! In communities where many parents are illiterate, encouraging their child to read provides an incredible developmental boost, and deepens familial bonds.

By enabling students to read extensively at a level that is comfortable to them, these Graded Readers create a pleasurable experience that in turn builds more confidence, more engagement with the language, and a regular reading habit!

This is why we say #readingrocks!

"With these graded readers, the students want to read more than ever before! These books really improve their confidence for reading, which then helps improve their vocabulary and pronunciation and also enhances their ability to blend words."

"PLF supported me through 16 years of education - fueling my determination to go further and make the most of the opportunities presented to me."

Veasna (top left) receives his degree in IT, and is one of 8 PLF students graduating this week. We are so proud of your hard work to arrive at this day!

Families living with food insecurity face a daily dilemma between sending their child to school, or out to work to help put food on the table.

By providing a daily hot meal to primary schoolers, we alleviate some of that impossible decision - ensuring students can attend, and remain, in class.

Annual award ceremony for higher education scholarships- and our biggest yet, with 53 awards made!

Each of these students have beaten monumental odds to arrive at this milestone, often being the first in their family to complete school – let alone go on towards higher education.
