The Original Learning Approach is a play responsive pedagogy rooted in social justice

Play activist - because if play flows the children will thrive.

Some words that feel important to me
Collective autonomy, decolonisation, wonder, curiosity, joy...
Play is play has become a blogpost... because there was more room to be able to articulate the complexity... of course even one blogpost cannot capture everything...

When it comes to the crunch its autonomy and flow that I think, as play-responsive educators we need to focus our attention on...
Creating space for a collective autonomy where we can be our authentic self together with others.

A country rooted in trust can have toilet signs like this...
A country rooted in fear, ignorance and hate cannot.

Right - Ethnographic Museum, Stockholm
Toilets used safely this week.

A pedagogy of hope is found in authentic relationships, with the children, colleagues and parents.
It is found in small acts of kindness.

There are just so many characters that allow us to explore different aspects of being human - even the forest becomes a character

And I just love the juxtaposition of them being big and small at the same time... which I played around with using photography

Of course collaboration is going to be harder if we teach and exist in a competitive world.
But I believe we can be changemakers... through respect, valuing each other, listening, curiosity and being open to new knowledge and unlearning.

The Original Learning Approach is about teaching the collaborative skills children need to tap into a play responsive approach to the world, learning and work rather than a competitive approach that creates rivals and pitches humans against each other.

In play it is the play - the doing/being/experience/process that is the motivation and it is intrinsic.

Competition is about pitching people/groups against each other to achieve whatever they seek to achieve - be it grades in school, the fastest runner, earning the most money.
It's about extrinsic motivation - the winning rather than the doing is the motivating force.

- challenges, collaborating, enjoying the buzz of what is being done rather than focusing on winning and the anxiety of losing.

But what I see is competition is being described as positive/healthy or negative - yet when I read the descriptions of positive competition it is seems less like competition and more like play -

Competitiveness I think is one of those things that we need to regulate just as we do with fear, anger and a whole myriad of feelings and states of being - regardless of whether they are perceived as positive or negative.

Recently I have been thinking about competition and how it affects our lives.
It really is just everywhere.

We seek to provide safe AND brave spaces for every child.
And in these times of rising fascism the Playarista course is about truth, belonging, community and healing as much as it is about nurturing the play-ecosystem.

You can now apply to my #playarista certification. It's being run by me, and hosted by Sally and her amazing @wunderledteaching team.

There are many ideas, bias and prejudices that limit our ability to notice play as play and shift it in to "unwanted behaviour" or "dangerous" or some other category that then shapes our adult brains as to how we are supposed to respond.

In April will be the start of my Playarista certification and course. Where we will learn how to help contribute towards creating deep pockets.

Deep pockets pedagogy.
I have found myself using the idea of deep pockets multiple times in the space of a short time when speaking with others.
I think it's worth sharing with everyone.

Some things can only be seen in the dark.
Some things can only be found when lost.
Sometimes we need to get lost in order to find our way.
Sometimes we need to embrace the darkness to see where the light is.

Art workshop with pedagogs in Amsterdam.
This is part of exploring democracy in the art studio - an opportunity to look at collective autonomy, control, agency, creativity, community and storytelling.
This is part of the process

Why is education and the welfare of children so frequently ignored?

What is the REAL purpose of school.?
What is that purpose achieved?
What should we have as a vision for education?
That is inclusive, equitable and rooted in well-being (that doesn't mean no challenges - because we need challenges as part of our wellbeing - it's why risky play exists).

But without education there are no Nobel Prize winners - HOW we educate others or ourselves is the real question - and how that links to care, compassion, equity, truth, welfare should be the real questions we ask ourselves about the systems of education

But I thought I would pick out some wise words shared by past Nobel Prize Laureates (some come from their actual Nobel speeches - Malala, MLK, Mandela - the others from interviews)

I am sat in the Nobel Prize Museum the day after the Nobel Prize. Nobel Prize laureates actually in the space too - not that I recognize them though.
