I randomly found an art vending machine on the street today and bought myself a tiny surprise artwork and something about physically putting the coins in the machine and opening the little box made it the most delightful experience I've had with any kind of art in a long time.
An old cigarette vending machine, painted in bright blue, green and yellow with a silhouette of a cityscape in black. It had been repurposed as an art vending machine, and the word "Kunstautomat" is written across the top. A small box, the size and shape of a cigarette carton. The text on the box reads "Warning: These pieces of art can enlighten, irritate, excite, and cause addiction. Don't ask your doctor if these pieces of art are right for you - ask yourself and send us your reply. We do not accept any liability. These pieces of art were individually wrapped by the artist. Each piece is unique. It now belongs to you." A small abstract painting with blotches of blue, yellow, red and green paint. It sits on a table next to the small cardboard box it came in. A piece of paper with a photo and biography of the artist, Hanneliese Schulze, written in German, as well as a small brochure about the art vending machine project are next to the painting.

My time in university bureaucracy makes me suspect that the subtext here is actually something more like "I am being ordered over my objections to enforce this shitty policy. But wouldn't it just be *terrible* if we got a flood of complaints, malicious compliance, and media attention about this?"
