I would have (still do?) said same but some people's behaviour during covid-19 put a lot of stress on this view and I'm not sure my politics didn't buckle under the weight a little bit

I guess this is correlated with how well the theories can be modelled mathematically but I can't quite spell out why I think this would lead to the division of labour other than maths is rich enough to study in its own right but I am not sure

Not the point you are making but there was always sort of myths around maths lecturers at some universities putting a millennium problem on the homework sheet just incase a student can solve the Riemann hypothesis real quick
