Was able to string some words together on how fascinatingly Korean cinema explores the Japanese imperialism, primarily to deal with that trauma in ways and perspectives that is very fresh and uniquely cathartic. Not sure if I did justice to my thoughts here, but regardless, Exhuma was great

My review of Exhuma on letterboxd: Enjoying this unique perspective of certain good Korean movies I discovered this year where they examine the Japanese colonialism across genres, and it's never a one-note good vs evil perspective, rather a case-study. As it should be with histories, they should be studied. Watched 3 such movies this year -- The Handmaiden, Uprising and this one, Exhuma -- with all of them having a different lens of viewing imperial Japan's impact on the Korean culture, whether it be during the invasion, after being invaded or in present times. And it's so fascinating to watch the different ways the writers tried to integrate the colonial aspect in all of these, never touching it directly yet making its presence felt. Exhuma does something really brave where it even integrates Japanese mythology into Korean ghost-folklore and the amalgam is a top-notch horror product. It was so good it made me go and read up on all the mythology connections and I kept falling more in awe the more I read. Sometimes you discover such great movies that you regret not experiencing them in theatres and this is definitely one of those for me. The way this film keeps digging up layers and layers of stories every 15 mins or so (digging quite literally and thematically) keeps you on hooks till the very end, a very rare feat for any film to achieve.

Very mild spoilers for some dialogues, and a very strong love for Ralph Fiennes and a non-review of Conclave

My review of Conclave on letterboxd: Every scene in this movie should have ended with Ralph Fiennes snapping at the other person out of nowhere when you least expect it. (person-1 in a civil convo): I'll keep voting for you. (ralph fiennes snapping randomly): I don't want YOUR vote !! I gave out a good long chuckle. (person-2): ...this conversation never took place. (person-2 walks off) (ralph fiennes snapping randomly): But it HAS taken place !! Another one was a scene where he randomly snapped at himself and angrily took down his skull cap. 🤌 I need a soundtrack with all the heavy breathing that Ralph Fiennes does in this movie and is accentuated by the sound dept so much throughout, I'll use it as my ASMR music to sleep to. Every time Ralph Fiennes was sad and tears welled up in his eyes I felt like going and hugging him. Seeing this dude after a couple of years on screen and instantly was reminded of why I love him. Now I have to catch up with The Menu, which I have been delaying for reasons beyond me. This was supposed to be a movie review but somehow became a Ralph Fiennes appreciation post and I'm fine with that.

Loved "All We Imagine as Light". Payal Kapadia comes as a brilliant promise to the future of Indian cinema, hitting it out of the park in her sophomore outing as well
My review for All We Imagine as Light on Letterboxd: A quintessential Mumbai film to its core, showcasing perfectly what it means to be a migrant here gripped by the city of dreams, having a hold on you, never letting you go. Payal Kapadia handles this with the same meditative touch that was evident in A Night of Knowing Nothing, even surpassing it, expertly shaping and moulding this gem of a film. Kani Kusruti is a happy 2024 discovery for me, after watching her in Girls Will Be Girls earlier this year too.
