Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are operating with such high-wire efficiency in THE STUDIO, a savvy dissection of the inner workings of Hollywood moviemaking and executives. Very rare to see a show that feels specifically made for me, but this was it and it’s incredible.

I didn’t loathe THE ELECTRIC STATE as much as the early buzz suggested. The visuals are actually quite good, and Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown make a solid pairing, but the premise feels shallow, and the overall structure a bit muddled. It’s perfectly fine as streaming fodder.

Really gelled with Andrew Patterson’s THE RIVALS OF AMZIAH KING, a vibrant and sturdy drama flowing with life and energy that finds Matthew McConaughey at his most vulnerable playing a rugged beekeeper while Angelina LookingGlass is a revelation. Super well done. #SXSW

Eli Craig’s CLOWN IN A CORNFIELD is the most fun I’ve had at #SXSW. Completely subverts expectations of a traditional slasher, has some wild & extremely gory kills, plus a great scream queen performance from Katie Douglas. This packed house was rolling. Gorehounds, don’t miss it.

DEATH OF A UNICORN: Had a good time with this clever and extremely bloody satire about corporate greed that’s like if JURASSIC PARK was an indie. Goes a little long and some narrative beats didn’t always land (CGI is a mess) but it gets the job done. #SXSW

The most unexpected buddy comedy of #SXSW goes to THE ACCOUNTANT 2 which is so tonally different than the first you can’t even compare them. It often clashes with the action elements, and lags when Affleck and Bernthal aren’t on screen. The latter of which is the MVP.

WE ARE STORROR is exactly what one would expect from a Michael Bay doc about parkour: it’s chaotic, thrilling and has some insane drone/aerial footage, but it can also ring emotionally hallow as it struggles to juggle all its free-flowing elements. But when it soars, it leaps. #SXSW

TOGETHER: Just when we are done with THE SUBSTANCE we get another gnarly and sick body horror ride from writer-director Michael Shanks with absolutely committed performances by Alison Brie and Dave Franco. The #SXSW midnight crowd devoured this. And I was right there with them.

Caught SPEED RACER on the big screen this weekend, and I’m so glad it’s been reevaluated for the cinematic gem it is. It boasts a rich, vibrant, and entirely unique visual language that was ahead of its time. 2008 just wasn’t ready for this banger.
