I got the point, it's just that others are interpretating that same data differently in light of (or as part of) their seeing it differently, e.g. bsky.app/profile/tim-...
It hits his stomach, his arm moves because he turns.

This video looks to indicate that it did hit his stomach after all, and not his arm as I had come to suspect. Thanks for unearthing it!

I'd imagine only Arsenal fans care to debate the point, and I've seen a lot of baffled disagreement between people who can only see it one way and not the other.

Yes, if you're a person who sees it hitting the arm rather than the stomach, that's the way you'll interpret it! And I'm not saying that's necessarily either correct or incorrect as an interpretation, just that lots of people aren't interpreting it in that way.

It's clearly not 'absurd' if such a large number of people can only see it hitting his stomach, and (similarly to you, but the opposite) can't understand how anybody can see the ball hitting the arm at all. I know it's frustrating not to be able to see what they're seeing, but they aren't just lying

I would merely be interested.
January 18, 2025 at 8:35 PM
I'm not sure any of that is particularly relevant, but I understand if you're having trouble perceiving the video in the way other people are (including a certain Ollie Watkins, who, in his post-match interview, indicates that he is among those who can only see it as deflecting off Havertz' stomach)
January 18, 2025 at 8:32 PM
There's no reason why it wouldn't - the ball is already on the way up having bounced up off the turf. I'm not necessarily taking a firm stand on which is correct, just pointing out that it's totally possible to see two very different things as happening here, which clearly people are!

I'd be really interested to see a poll on this - how many can only see it hitting stomach, how many only arm? From the responses I've seen, I'd guess more than half can only see it hitting his arm.

From this angle, I don't think you can tell. Would need to see a couple of other angles to know, I think.

Whichever way you see it, try seeing it the other way as you watch it over. Eventually something clicked in my brain and I could see what other people were seeing.
January 18, 2025 at 8:12 PM
So did I, the first 100 times I watched it. I couldn't see it the other way. Then I realised they think it's coming off his *right* arm at the exact same moment. It's a genuine yanny/laurel, blue-black/white-gold dress perceptual thing.

It's an optical illusion. A gestalt phenomenon. You can either see it as deflecting off his stomach or see it as deflecting off his right forearm, but not both. It's a weird perceptual quirk. Pretty sure the former is correct, and I sincerely hope VAR didn't just look at this one misleading angle.
