A new chapter starts today ✨️
As I'll be completing my PhD this year, I just started a new position at the @hertieschool.bsky.social as a Research Associate at their Centre for Sustainability.
An exciting year between Paris and Berlin, from the end of the PhD to the beginning of something new 🙌

The quant reveals spatial patterns of discontent aligned with key structural dimensions:
- composition (prevalence of vulnerable workers)
- economic structure (reliance on carbon-intensive sectors)
- material conditions (low density, limited infrastructure, constrained access to local services)

🚨New working paper 🚨

Excited to share my new working paper on rural discontent with climate policies in Europe.

As the climate backlash materialises, especially in rural places, I ask: why do people oppose the green transition in rural areas?

A quick 🧵

Drawing on survey data from European countries and an additional analysis in France, findings indicate significant differences in support for policies placing higher concentrated or cumulative costs on rural residents AND those potentially generating other grievances.
July 1, 2025 at 9:36 AM
This clearer distinction matters because (i) we shouldn't just expect backlash on COSTLY policies and (ii) the spatial expression of support is variable – ranging from discrete urban–rural divides to more gradual patterns of discontent that intensify as population density and commune size decline.
July 1, 2025 at 9:36 AM
While much of the literature in climate politics insists that people react to the costs of policies, little has been said about the spatialisation of these perceptions.

Considering the vulnerability of rural areas to many climate policies, I ask whether perceptions are clustered across space & why

Had a great time attending the @civica.bsky.social Political Behaviour conference in Vienna yesterday to talk about symbolic policies and climate policy support (see osf.io/preprints/os...) ... even though it meant being exposed to Emily in Paris' memes by @markkayser.bsky.social

How to talk about cars without crashing the climate agenda?
We have solutions for progressive policymakers!

Our policy brief w/ @transenv.bsky.social & @fondationjjaures.bsky.social offers a way forward to reclaim the narrative and make the transition fair despite the #backlash

Reading a recent article from @theguardian.com, I saw these compelling graphs from a study published last year: (i) people then to overwhelmingly support climate action and (ii) to underestimate the support in the population.

This has several key implications for climate politics. [1/6]

Excited to share the last version of our working paper on the effect on so-called "symbolic policies" on climate policy support!

We've all heard the news about a road built in the Amazon forest for COP30 (even the BBC mentioned it).

Well, that's incorrect. The construction is unrelated. It doesn't mean that it's good news, but we have here a clear case of misinformation around the climate summit...

Exciting to see that the research-politics nexus can deliver!

Here an example of MEP @tpellerincarlin.bsky.social citing our work (with @malojan.bsky.social & @luissattelmayer.bsky.social) on how symbolic policies targeting elites can build climate policy support⤵️

Interesting results from a French survey on climate policy support: most policies (even costly ones) are supported by a majority (often substantially).

➡️ The climate backlash is likely driven by populist leaders (and those reproducing their narratives) more so than by people's anti-green attitudes
