So sad to come across this precious little bird on our amble - perhaps too tired or hungry, overcome with exposure due to the cold spell?
The image shows a Woodcock, found dead today on our walk. These cryptically marked waders feed on woodland edges at night time. They have short legs, beautiful stripey plumage, and a very long straight tapering bill. It was so sad to come across this precious little bird on our amble - perhaps too tired or hungry, overcome with exposure due to the cold spell? It was lying on the woodland floor among fallen leaves and grass.

A chilly but glorious day for ambling. Sadly, shooting disturbance meant Mistle Thrush, Fieldfare, and Skylark abandoned feeding in the fields and took refuge in the woodland edges to join Jay, mixed Tit flocks and Blackbird...

Candlesnuff fungus (Xylaria hypoxylon) is a bioluminescent species, we read....

We're thinking this may be a group of Xerocomus chrysenteron or Red Cracking Bolete in the garden...

A Western Conifer Seedbug (Leptoglossus occidentalis) has wandered into the garage this morning, looking for somewhere to overwinter....
A slim, attractive brown insect with long legs and antennae is shown in the photo. It has alternating light and dark bands that run along the outer wing edges on the flaring sides of the abdomen in an elegant pattern, making it a distinctive true bug. It is pictured on the pale orangey-red brickwork of the garage wall, as it has come in from the garden looking for a place to overwinter.

We've seen three Angle Shades Moth larvae (Phlogophora meticulosa) today in leaf litter....

A Rusty Dot Pearl (Udea ferrugalis) in the garden this morning....
We read that this brown coloured moth with prominent, blackish markings towards the edge of its wings is a moth that flies through the year, but mainly in the autumn. It is sat in the damp green grass in brilliant sunshine in the garden.

A Pine Ladybird (Exochomus quadripustulatus) in the garden today....
A Pine Ladybird (Exochomus quadripustulatus) in the garden today. The beetle is almost circular in shape, and shining, with a flange around the base. It is black with two larger red comma-shaped spots and two smaller round red spots on its elytra. We spotted it wandering up the browny-green branch of a Beech hedge.

Still two Large White caterpillar munching away on the organic Brussel Sprout plants....
When we checked today, there were still two Large White caterpillar munching away on the organic Brussel Sprout plants. The larvae of the Large White butterfly are patterned with yellow and black stripey markings down their furry-looking bodies. They are eating the green leaves of our Brussel Sprout plants in the vegetable garden and when ready, will crawl off to a suitable place for the winter to each tuck up as a pupa, ready to emerge as butterflies next summer as part of their life cycle.

We came across a really tiny fungi with conical or bell-shaped caps and thin fragile stem. We think they are Mycena species and read they are saprotrophic using the dead and decaying matter in the garden - macro shot of one....

We read that it is edible, and it certainly lives up to its name by looking like a piece of bleached, white coral. It is growing among the brown and grey stones of a gravel path. A slim, attractive brown insect with long legs and antennae is shown in the photo. It has alternating light and dark bands that run along the outer wing edges on the flaring sides of the abdomen in an elegant pattern, making it a distinctive true bug. It is pictured on a bathroom tile as it has come in from the garden looking for a place to overwinter. We popped it back outside to find a more suitable place.

An umbo is a raised area in the centre of a mushroom cap. We need to have another, much closer look as we read the broad adnate gills are greenish with yellow edges.
