In 2010, the Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASP) were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, a prestigious award that recognized their invaluable service during World War II.

Their legacy continues to inspire the next generation of female pilots.

Jeanne Holm was the first woman to be promoted to Brig Gen in the USAF. In the 1960s and 70s she was a strong advocate for opening more roles to women in the military, including pilot training and combat. She retired as a 2-star.

Ida Van Smith was an aviation pioneer who learned to fly at age 50 and founded more than 20 flight clubs for underprivileged children across the United States in the 1970s. Now her great granddaughter Toni Paylor is following in her footsteps by getting a degree in aviation engineering at UMd.

The USAF removed Tuskegee Airmen & Women Airforce Service Pilots of WWII from basic training curriculum. For 30 years I promised these women I would not let them ever be forgotten again. Lilly is with her instructor, Sooji Oh, a previous First Wings scholarship recipient and now a CFI at DeLand Aviation.
