Piping plovers — tiny, lively and endangered birds — have visited Wasaga Beach every summer since 2007.

But things may be changing — and what happens here could be a sign of what’s to come elsewhere in Ontario.

Any Ontario minister in Doug Ford’s government could soon have the power to create law-free zones — and decide what gets built there.

It’s lucky that Ontario reporter @meyer.bsky.social grabbed a souvenir from the Shania Twain Centre in Timmins while he could. The money-losing attraction was demolished in 2014 to make room for the gold mine next door:

Northwest B.C. reporter Matt Simmons investigated the issue for months. The outcome: two bombshell stories — and real change in how the regulator inspects oil and gas companies and shares information with the public.

What’s going on at Wasaga Beach is a complicated moment in the history of “Ontario’s summer playground,” and the outcome could set a precedent for how provincial parks are protected in the future. Get up to speed here: thenarwhal.ca/wasaga-beach... (6/6)

But change is coming. The town has long alleged having a provincial park inside its boundaries impedes economic growth, and Premier Doug Ford is listening. In May he announced a plan to remove more than half the beach — and all of the plover habitat — from the park and transfer it to the town. (4/6)

As a provincial park, Wasaga Beach and its plovers currently enjoy a protected status. Ontario Parks collaborates with Birds Canada to monitor and protect plover nests, and park staff refrain from raking the beach where plovers are known to be. (3/6)

This 14-kilometre shoreline draws over a million annual visitors, a tourism boon that underpins the Town of Wasaga Beach’s local economy. But sharing space with all those beachgoers? Piping plovers, an endangered bird that relies on Wasaga’s sand dunes as summer nesting habitat. (2/6)

Chef Michael Smith keeps coming back home to P.E.I. — a place that he finds awe-inspiring not just for its beautiful patchwork quilt, but “through coming to understand the communities within it.”

For decades, Gwich’in on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border have worked together to defend the herd and lobby U.S. policymakers against drilling. Now, they’re vowing to do it again. An emergency meeting to explore options is scheduled in Alaska on Sept. 4, 2025. (5/6)

This year, Caribou Days’ festive atmosphere gave way to sober discussions of new threats facing the herd. U.S. president Donald Trump has ordered increased oil and gas drilling in its Alaskan calving grounds, which the Gwich’in — and Western science — say would be devastating to the herd. (4/6)

Each spring, Gwich’in people celebrate their bond with the caribou during Vadzaih Choo Drin, or “Big Caribou Days,” in Old Crow, Yukon. Hundreds of people attend from across the North for games and festivities as the herd’s migration passes through Old Crow. (3/6)

For thousands of years, the Gwich’in in Yukon and Alaska have lived alongside the Porcupine caribou herd, whose approximately 200,000 animals migrate through Gwich’in territory every spring and fall. (2/6)

The federal government has been tight-lipped about what initiatives it wants to fast-track, but pipeline projects are expected to be among them. Mikisew’s chief, Billy-Joe Tuccaro, said he worries fossil fuel expansion will expose his people to more harm. (6/9)

The federal government says there is “no possibility” of First Nations’ constitutional rights being overridden as a result of C-5’s passage. But several experts warned a botched rollout could trash years of hard-won trust between Indigenous leadership and the Crown. (4/9)

Every single degree Celsius of increased global temperature is associated with a 4.7% increase in domestic violence, the UN found. When wildfires — like those raging across Canada for months now — cut off roads and communication, it “prevents any kind of escape or intervention,” a B.C. expert said.
