Cuddled up as mama works on a safety orange vest to go with mine on our woodland adventures! A few leaves still clinging, to a tree I have yet to identify but it has what looks like blueberries the size of grapes on it! We'll see what iNaturalist thinks.

I am SO EXCITED with how my foraging chatelaine is coming together! A compact for bug balm, pencil, match safe, and whistle. I've got a compass on the way, and the other side of my pack has pocket binoculars and my mushroom knife! #forage #vintage #woodland #adventure #muttshroom #maine #chatelaine
I thought a chatelaine for foraging tools was a fun idea, and I am THRILLED with how well it's coming together! I'm going to make a bug balm for the compact, there's a pencil I need to find a notepad for, match safe, and whistle so far. The whistle, and compass I have on the way will be on longer chains so I can use them without having to stop and unclip things and I think bending a little cocktail fork to make a hook will be perfect! The other side of my pack has pocket binoculars and my mushroom knife. A little spool of fishing line and maybe tweezers for removing thorns and splinters should finish it off nicely!

Washed Sparkleberries (It will never cease to amuse me that they're really called that, it's the absolute best thing ever!) in a pot with two Macoun apples, and a hint of vanilla bean, pour some sugar on it baby, and cook down to mush. Definitely strain, as those teeny stems are a pain to pluck individually and Sparkleberries do have a pretty large seed for the size of berry. The leftover mash, I'm going to use and infuse a cider I'll make out of the rest of the apples I picked!

I love taking notes of things like when the first of different mushrooms pop up, I've been having so much fun with the bird feeder in my yard! I've never been able to use a daily planner to *make plans* but it's PERFECT for recording observations!

I had the idea to use a planner as a way to record dates for first sightings, and my planting schedule but figured there was no point to buying one in July, not two days later came across this ridiculously perfect one! It's absolutely great for keeping a record of who comes to the bird feeder, what I find out on adventures, and it'll be so much fun comparing year after year!

A calm river, with golden autumn trees Autumn gold and reflections in the river This is the Autumn Olive, otherwise known as "Sparkleberry" and it is DELICIOUS The trees produce a lot of small, red fruit with light speckles, or "sparkles" and taste of citrus, or pomegranate. Each tree is actually different! They can be eaten raw, but are often cooked down into jams, and I'll be making some apple cider with them!
