Just stumbled upon the substitution video on Youtube, took a peek at this and... man, this list is absolutely bonkers. I don't fully know what process you guys took to get here, but it was weeeeird.

Also depressing. I wonder if it's time to have mandatory games to play in school, like we do books.

Does it? I guess?

I mean, I don't know how you'd do live action Zelda without having it be cosplay-y, and I don't know that being cosplay-y is a bad thing.

But... you know, it is that.

I am very pleased by the complete lack of a touchpad on the VR controllers and I'm ready to take crap for that going forward.

Having suffered through the Vive controllers I will gladly take it.

So what if it's not done? Does it change your view if devs are still working on later episodes?

Also, do you feel the same way about TV shows? Would you rather have everything be bingeable day one? Why do you think the consensus shifted back to having shows drop weekly there?
November 5, 2025 at 7:15 PM
I'm not sure HL2 fits the model. Cadence is valid, but we ended up substituting it for content drops on early access games, which I'd argue gets you all the same downsides without the upside of a self-contained experience on each episode drop.
November 5, 2025 at 7:13 PM
I'm guessing when the game is not great and people disengage halfway it's relatively easy to blame the release cadence instead? But tons of games deflate in a week or two regardless.
November 5, 2025 at 6:31 PM
Anecdotal but relevant: I played every episode of Hitman, but never finsihed 2 or 3.

There's value to reminding people your game exists at regular intervals as an engagement strategy. I've never understood why the scheme has such a weirdly negative reputation.
November 5, 2025 at 6:31 PM
Which is why I caveated that this is regardless of the review being good. I haven't read it in full but the first paragraph isn't... super exciting.

But there is (or can be) value in going "hey, Zelda as a franchise is played out" as a response to a spin-off Zelda game. That's a valid angle.
November 5, 2025 at 6:28 PM
I am confused by this tangent. The question was what's the value in a reviewer who dismisses the genre regardless of the game (verbatim) and the answer is: prescription about the art form as a whole is a valuable part of critique.

You are projecting a non sequitur where there is none.
November 5, 2025 at 6:26 PM
The fact that you asked is a bit disappointing, too. Art critique is meant to support a healthy dose of the commentator telling people what they think the art form should be.

The fact that people here can't entertain that is a bit of a loss, even if the review in question is not well constructed.

It avoids the insular, in-group nitpicky reviews for the niche that drive modern media.

If you're not a connoisseur an audiophile identifying the Hz range where premium headphones sound a bit shrill may do less for you than "they sound good but are overpriced" outsider review.

Hey, you asked.

It's quite heartening to see GoG going for it again after a period of quiet coasting.

I'm mildly annoyed about AAA releases like Expedition 33, Silent Hill or Indiana Jones making it a bit too late, but hey, it's much better than not showing up.

I guess there's an argument to be had about dropping some of the tech-driven stylization and what that does to the whole aesthetic.

But also, there are like five renditions of this exact stuff you can boot up right now. The real question is who has the energy to care at this point.

Weirdly, compressed images and videos kinda look more like natively running good CRT filters. Even the stills I posted above look a bit fuzzy and soft here but aggressively sharp and overly bright when seen raw on the display.
October 20, 2025 at 3:06 PM
Yeah, compression and resizing do mess with what is ultimately a pixel or subpixel-level shader.

That and the crappy scanline filters you get in many commercial releases may be why they have a bad reputation. Streamers can't show them off properly and most people only see them at their worst.
October 20, 2025 at 3:05 PM
W/O CRT filtering, if you're a heathen with bad taste.

Should be easy to make toggleable on modern consoles.

Bad quality CRT filtering in emu releases are ALSO a head scratcher.

My "tasteful upres" preset on emulation, FWIW.

PSX games can look SO stylish and smooth. I blame press and influencers bragging about "in 4K" and "fixing" render features. People don't have buzzwords for "authentic looking" and teams working on these don't focus on that as a value as a result.
October 17, 2025 at 4:43 PM
What bothers me is there's great opportunity to scale games of this gen. 2x res keeps the chunk while making thinks look better. Emulation can adjust the dither grid to match that, which looks amazing...

For some reason commercial projects always go nuts on 20 year old filtering techniques instead.

Just to make it explicit, there is no "western countries" anymore. As far as I'm concerned, the US is just another undemocratic adversary at this point.

What I'm saying is nationalize Google and Meta, you cowards.

Me he tenido que buscar la fuente, porque no encontraba el post y no me parecía plausible.

Pero no, es una cita literal.

Y parece estar leyendo un discurso, no parece un lapsus. No entiendo qué podría estar intentando decir si no. Alguien debería preguntarle.

I mean, if it helps I'm very middle-of-the-road, pros-and-cons, both-sides-of-the-issue about all this stuff and I still think this is a super fucking weird thing to say.

I had genuinely forgotten how hard Skate 1 went with the fisheye and vignetting until I looked it up for this. Bold.
